Global average ocean pH

WaterOceans & Seas

This quantity comes from a time series measurement and the most recent value (2019) is reported.

Value:

This is equivalent to...

[H+] ≈ 0.2 parts per billion

HuID: 90472
Relevant Year(s): 2019
Summary: The global annual average pH of the surface ocean. Ocean acidification is quantified by a decrease in pH: a decrease in pH value means an increase in acidity [H+].
Method: Measurements are taken from the Copernicus Marine Service and based on a reconstruction method using in situ data and remote sensing data, as well as empirical relationships. The indicator is available at annual resolution, from the year 1985 onwards. The estimated yearly uncertainty envelope shown in the figure is defined as the annual mean of pH ± 2 × the standard deviation, which corresponds to a 95 % confidence interval of the mean estimate.
