Global surface temperature change

Atmospheric & Biogeochemical CyclesGreenhouse Gases

This quantity comes from a time series measurement and the most recent value (2020) is reported.

Value:

This is equivalent to...

2.20 ± 0.09 °F

HuID: 79598
Relevant Year(s): 2020
Summary: The global surface temperature change (known in the literature as anomaly) reflects the temperature over the Earth's land and sea surface collected from a variety of meteorological instruments and relative to reference years 1850-1900.
Method: Data obtained from the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) Surface Temperature Analysis ver. 4 (GISTEMP v4). The uncertainty for 1880-2018 is obtained from Lenssen et al. 2019, DOI:10.1029/2018JD029522. The uncertainty for 2020 given here is derived from Lenssen et al. 2019 where it is noted that the uncertainty of annual global mean temperatures since 1960 is approximately ± 0.05 °C. The uncertainty represents the 95% confidence interval.
