Global agricultural use of phosphate (P2O5)

Atmospheric & Biogeochemical CyclesPhosphorus

This quantity comes from a time series measurement and the most recent value (2018) is reported.

Value:

This is equivalent to...

≈ 41 Mt P2O5 / yr

HuID: 56418
Relevant Year(s): 2018
Summary: Mass of phosphate (P2O5) used for agricultural purposes in the period 1961-2018. Phosphorus is one of the key plant nutrients found in most fertilizers, together with nitrogen and potassium. Phosphate is mostly obtained from phosphate rock, which contains 15% to 41% P2O5, as reported by the IFA.
Method: The main data source for production and agricultural use is the FAOSTAT Fertilizers questionnaire, complemented with national publications when available. Agricultural use of fertilizers refers to the use for crops, livestock, forestry, fisheries and aquaculture, excluding use for animal feed. Industrial uses, also known as technical uses, are excluded, to the extent allowed by data availability. No uncertainty is provided by FAO.
