Atmospheric CH4 growth rate

Atmospheric & Biogeochemical CyclesGreenhouse Gases

This quantity comes from a time series measurement and the most recent value (2017) is reported.

Value:

This is equivalent to...

{1.28 (+0.202, -0.210)} × 1010 kg C / yr

17 (+2.7, -2.8) Mt CH4 / yr

12.8 (+2.02, -2.10) Mt C / yr

HuID: 30725
Relevant Year(s): 2017
Summary: Represents the estimated annual growth rate in the total quantity of methane (CH4) in the atmosphere. See Table 3 of the source. "Atmospheric growth is given in the same unit (Tg CH4 / yr), based on the conversion factor of 2.75 Tg CH4 / ppb given by Prather et al. 2012 DOI: 10.1029/2012gl051440, and the atmospheric growth rates provided in the text in parts per billion per year."
Method: The value is derived by taking observed concentrations of CH4 in the atmosphere and integrating this over the volume of the atmosphere to determine the total mass of atmospheric CH4, and subsequently determining the rate at which this value changes year over year. Uncertainties are due to differences between measurements of atmospheric methane concentration. See Figure 1 for details concerning the different concentration measurements, and see Table 3 of the source for more details concerning values and uncertainties.
